Accounting for the business cycle: Nominal rigidities, factor heterogeneity, and Austrian capital theory

چکیده
An Austrian interpretation of the New Keynesian small menu cost model of the business cycle is proposed. Austrian and New Keynesian business cycle theories share the feature that the cycle is generated by rigidities which prevent the economy from adapting instantaneously to changing conditions. Austrian business cycle theory is capital-based, focusing on credit expansion which artificially lowers interest rates and causes an investment boom and unsustainable business expansion. In contrast, the New Keynesian small menu cost model of the business cycle is based on nominal rigidities which prevent markets from clearing. Small menu costs introduce dichotomous behavior, where firms find it locally optimal to avoid instantaneous output price adjustments in the face of the cost, but this local optimum results in economy-wide output and employment fluctuations which are much greater in relative magnitude. The small menu cost model of the business cycle is extended and reinterpreted in light of Austrian business cycle theory with heterogeneous, multiply-specific capital, thus providing a rigorous formalization of the Austrian business cycle. The Austrian interpretation of this New Keynesian model fortuitously addresses several of its shortcomings.

Austrian persistence? Capital-based business cycle theory and the dynamics of investment spending
Survey data are used to investigate the very long spending lags estimated in neoclassical studies of investment expenditures. Neoclassical investment theory has trouble explaining the length of these lags. By recognizing the Austrian concept of the capital structure and applying it to the problem, the present paper explains the length of these lags as proceeding from interactions between types ...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Capital Investment Choice and Capital Productivity: A Test of Firm Life Cycle Theory (A Comparative Investigation of Cyclical and Non-Cyclical Companies)
According to the firm life cycle theory, companies go through certain behavioral patterns in various stages of their life. A thorough understanding and recognition of these behavioral patterns, new investment in assets and the optimal use of assets can considerably enhance the capital productivity. In the current study, the relationship between the stages of firm life cycle and capital producti...

A number of recent papers have focused on the role of real factors in accounting for the persistent effects of monetary shocks. These factors include habit persistence in consumption, variable capital utilization, and produced inputs. In this chapter, I focus on labor market rigidities that prevent unemployed workers from Þnding new jobs immediately and Þrms with job vacancies from Þlling them ...
متن کاملThe Capital-Using Economy
It is no exaggeration to say that Capital Theory is fundamental to everything else in Austrian Economics. It lies at its core, implicit in discussions of monetary policy, the business cycle, the entrepreneur, and the subjectivity of value and expectations. Prior to the Keynesian revolution it was Capital Theory for which the Austrian School was most known among mainstream economists. With the a...
متن کاملFair Wages in a New Keynesian Model of the Business Cycle∗
We build a New Keynesian model of the business cycle with sticky prices and real wage rigidities motivated by efficiency wages of the gift exchange variety. Compared to a standard sticky price model, our Fair Wage model provides an explanation for structural unemployment and generates more plausible labor market dynamics — notably accounting for the low correlation between wages and employment....
